Are international collaborations proving to be a curse for Starboy?

With each new blessing comes a new set of curses. It’s a fact of life that when you hit a new height in life, you would have to begin to deal with a whole new challenges that put you through the wire and drain you out. These new curses either make or mar you. If you successfully deal with them, and enjoy your blessings, you would continue on the path of growth. If the curses overpower you, then you come crashing down.

Wizkid hit a new level and gained a blessing when he began to work with Drake . That move which started out well on ‘Ojuelegba ’, and moved with increasing speed and success on

‘One Dance’, opened up a lot of doors for Wizzy. He became the toast of the new African wave in the international scene. And he attacked it with vigor.

Wikid has recorded with the biggest names on the planet. He worked with Tinie Tempah, Chris Brown, Chris Martin, Nico & Vinz, Ty Dolla Sign, Trey Songz, French Montana, Swizz Beatz , and more. Dej Loaf gave him a shout out, Zara Larsson put him on her album, Sony Music signed him up on a mega contract, and handed him to RCA Records for distribution, and the blessings flowed.

But where these blessings struck, a new curse showed up. Wizkid began to lose focus on the home front, and became ‘lazy’ in releasing new music. In the space of a year (Late 2015-2016 December) he only dropped ‘Baba Nla’, as his official single, while teasing new music but failing to release them.

He has promised an album, a mixtape, and many more. None of that has showed up. The only consistent thing about his work has been the hype about recording and the success of his collaborations.

In late 2016 he came through with ‘Daddy Yo’, and the next month, an unfinished song with Drake was leaked online. These singles showed the singer working hard at the Caribbean sound, and tweaking his delivery to include patois.

But between 2015 and 2016, Wizkid’s discography looks bare. That’s what you get from a lazy artiste. The work rate which is being advertised on Instagram and Twitter has not yielded new music for himself. Only for others.

That’s why it feels like a curse for the singer.

By achieving the expansion of his fanbase and markets, Wizkid hit a new level that has blessed him tremendously. But his personal output has been drastically cut short, and that in itself is a curse.
